Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
What is PCOS?
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex condition that affects the hormonal, metabolic and reproductive systems. Up to 10-20% of women and people assigned female at birth (AFAB) in the reproductive age have PCOS.
Key factors that are theorised to cause PCOS include genetic predisposition and environmental factors.
N.B. Your PCOS is not caused by your weight. This is a common misconception.
PCOS may increase risk of future health complications such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, fatty liver disease, anovulatory infertility, endometrial cancer and breast cancer.
Thankfully, you can alleviate symptoms and significantly reduce risk of future health complications when you treat PCOS early with holistic nutrition and lifestyle improvements.
Signs & symptoms
Signs and symptoms can vary amongst individuals and may include:
Hyperandrogenism, characterised by hormonal acne, excess hair growth and hair loss
Irregular or missing periods
Immature follicles that appear like cysts on ultrasound
Insulin resistance symptoms like abdominal weight gain, carb cravings, brain fog
Inflammation symptoms like fatigue, muscle soreness, gut issues
Adrenal dysfunction symptoms like exhaustion, gut issues, anxiety and depression
Anovulatory infertility
Conventional medical vs our treatment
Current conventional medical treatment includes:
Hormonal birth control (The Pill, Mirena IUD, etc)
Metformin
Spironolactone (for excess hair growth)
Accutane (for acne)
Weight loss (including medications, diets and surgery)
Though these treatments may seem to improve selective symptoms in the short-term, most don’t improve long-term health outcomes.
